Running the Race From the time I have been able to have “real” conversations with my boys I have made it a priority to speak and pray with them before they go to bed. Sometimes we are silly, sometimes I wrestle with them, almost always we hear mom from another room declaring that it is “late and past their bed times.” There have been times when I have had to defend myself because I kept them from sleep, but tonight, I was shown that it has all been worth it. Tonight, after praying with Isaac, tears began to well up in his eyes. Before I could ask him what was wrong, he told me that sometimes he worries about his faith. He told me that sometimes he questions his salvation. He told me that sometimes his faith is really strong, but sometimes he wonders if he is truly saved. A week later his (Jesus’) disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your fingers here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.” Thomas said, “My Lord and my God!” Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” (John 20:26-29) This is why I have spent time with him almost every night for the last 8 years. I have prayed many times that he would talk to me when he was afraid or uncertain. And now here was my chance. He was telling me that he feels like something is wrong with him. He was telling me that he wanted so much to be saved but doubts his faith. He was asking me if he is the only one who questions his faith. We all know he isn’t the only one, is he? Don’t we all question our faith sometimes? Why? People saw Jesus crucified, dead, and living again. He visited them. He spoke to them. He ate with them. But sometimes we worry, wonder, and question the power of the cross and our salvation. Perhaps during this Easter season we really don’t need to worry about doing anything fancy. Maybe, we just need to focus on recommitting ourselves to our relationship with Jesus. As we run the race, let us do it with confidence; knowing that the story of the cross and resurrection is real, powerful, and can truly change our lives. Your Brother in Christ, Todd Smoldon |
